Recovering From Surgery Abroad: What to Expect

What the recovery period actually looks like after major surgery in India, and how to plan for it realistically before you travel.

Most of the planning around medical travel focuses on getting to the hospital and through the procedure itself. Recovery gets far less attention β€” but it's usually the longest part of the trip, and the part that determines how the whole experience actually feels. Here's what to realistically expect.

Recovery timelines vary more than people expect

There's no single answer to "how long will I be there," because it depends entirely on the procedure. As a general shape:

  • Joint replacement (knee/hip): typically 10-14 days in India before flying home, including surgery and initial physiotherapy, though full recovery continues for weeks after
  • Cardiac surgery: hospital stay is often 5-10 days, but doctors usually recommend staying in-country for a couple of weeks total for follow-up checks before a long flight
  • Cancer treatment: highly variable β€” a single surgical procedure might mean a short stay, while a chemotherapy or radiation protocol can mean staying for the full course, sometimes months
  • Dental and cosmetic procedures: often the shortest, sometimes a matter of days

Whatever your treating surgeon tells you, it's worth mentally budgeting a few extra days beyond that estimate. Complications aren't the norm, but recovery is biological, not scheduled β€” plans that assume the absolute minimum stay tend to cause stress if anything shifts even slightly.

What the hospital handles vs. what you'll manage yourself

Immediately after surgery, you're in the hospital's hands β€” pain management, wound care, monitoring, physiotherapy sessions if relevant. Where it changes is after discharge, when you move to accommodation near the hospital for the remainder of your recovery window. At that point, more responsibility shifts to you and whoever is accompanying you:

  • Following medication schedules exactly as prescribed
  • Getting to follow-up appointments (your coordinator should help arrange transport for this)
  • Basic wound care and knowing what warning signs mean you should contact the hospital immediately, not wait for your next scheduled visit
  • Managing day-to-day needs β€” food, mobility, rest β€” in an unfamiliar place, which is where having a companion travelling with you matters most

This is why a companion isn't just a comfort β€” it's practical

Most hospitals support a Medical Attendant Visa for exactly this reason. In the first several days post-discharge especially, having someone else able to communicate with hospital staff, handle logistics, and simply be present makes a measurable difference to how recovery goes.

Emotional recovery matters as much as physical

It's rarely talked about, but being away from home, family, and familiar surroundings while recovering from a major procedure is genuinely difficult β€” more than most people expect before they travel. A few things that help:

  • Keeping regular contact with family back home, even short daily calls
  • Not comparing your own recovery pace to what you read online β€” every case is different, and a slower week doesn't mean something is wrong
  • Asking your coordinator questions as they come up rather than sitting with worry β€” this is exactly what they're there for

Follow-up care after you return home

Recovery doesn't end when you fly home. Before you leave India, make sure you have:

  • A full discharge summary and treatment report, in a format your local doctor can use
  • Clear instructions on medication to continue, and for how long
  • A way to reach your treating hospital or coordinator if something comes up after you're back β€” most facilitators, including VezoraCare, stay a point of contact for exactly this

Whether that means a local doctor taking over routine monitoring, or returning to India for a specific follow-up procedure, having this arranged before you leave β€” not figured out after a problem arises β€” makes the whole journey feel complete rather than left hanging.
